Polyacrylamide

Drilling polymer Polyacrylamide (PAA) is a water-soluble polymer widely used in water treatment, chemical and oil refining industries. Chemical formula - (-CH2CHCONH2-)n. The substance is a finely granulated white powder. The container with the chemical is marked with the name "PAM" or "Polyacrylamide". Industrial production of polyacrylamide has been carried out since the 1950s. The material is used in many industries as a film-forming, gel-forming inhibitor, flocculant, coagulant. Main properties of PAA: dissolves quickly in water; insoluble in organic compounds; pH values - from 7 to 14; reacts with alkalis, metal ions; melting temperature - 115 °C; average density - 1.13 g/m3. The powder is highly hygroscopic, therefore polyacrylamide should be stored in premises with a humidity level of no more than 80% with effective forced or natural ventilation. In oil production and refining, polyacrylamide is used : for reservoir flooding; during well repair operations; in drilling muds for clay hydration; for settling suspended particles during drilling.
