MIBK
A chemical compound of the ketone class, a colorless volatile liquid with a sharp odor reminiscent of acetone, more pungent than methyl ethyl ketone and acetone.
Characteristics:
Content of main substance, not less than: 99%
Acidity in terms of acetic acid, not more than: 0.01%
Water content, not more than: 0.1%
Color on platinum-cobalt scale, not more than: 15
Methyl isobutyl ketone is used as a solvent for nitrocellulose, polyacrylic, perchlorovinyl paints and coatings, in the production of linoleum, as well as adhesives, oil dewaxing for lubricants, printing inks, and also as a deoiling composition for paraffins (to remove low-melting paraffin in mixture with oils). Various sulfhydryl reagents are used as collectors in flotation of sulfide copper-zinc ores: xanthates, dithiophosphates (aerofloats), dixanthogenides, aerofloats and others. Pine oil, cyclohexanol, MIBK, T-66, T-80, TEV and others are used as frothers. Reagent modifiers (regulators, activators and depressors) are also used: lime, cyanides and sulfates, etc.
Main physical properties of pure methyl isobutyl ketone
Molar mass of methyl isobutyl ketone: 100.16 g/mol
Melting point: -80 °C
Boiling point: 117.4 °C
Flash point: 14 °C
The substance irritates the eyes and respiratory tract. May affect the central nervous system. Exposure at levels significantly exceeding the MPC can cause loss of consciousness.
Explosive in mixture with air at concentrations of 1.97-10.2%.
At temperatures above 14°C, explosive vapor/air mixtures may form. Do not allow open flames, sparks and smoking.
