Brick for lining Main types of refractory brick Refractory brick can be purchased in several types depending on the type of manufacturing base. This parameter determines the main purpose and application of a particular type of product. The following types of refractories are distinguished: Quartz refractory brick. Produced from quartzite rocks or from pure sandstones. Clay acts as a binding component. During sintering, they form a dense structure without air inclusions. Their area of application is limited, since such brick poorly withstands the influence of alkalis and iron oxide. They are often used in the construction of metallurgical furnaces, where contact is possible exclusively with open fire or molten metal. Also, using this type of refractory brick, arches of reverberatory furnaces are built. Basic refractory brick. Made from limestone rocks saturated with magnesian elements. A distinctive feature is an open porous structure (about 30% pores). Such products perfectly withstand the effects of aggressive gases, basic slags, and can easily come into contact with molten metal. Such refractory brick has a special purpose and is most often used in the metallurgical industry. Carbon refractory brick. This is a product made of pressed graphite or coal with the addition of coke coal, bitumen, and coal tar. Some varieties of carbon refractories contain chamotte in their composition. Their difference is a high coefficient of thermal conductivity, resistance to molten metals and slags. The use of this type of refractory is also highly specialized. Most often they are used for lining metallurgical furnaces, blast furnace troughs. Refractory chamotte brick. This refractory belongs to the category of universal refractories, and therefore its popularity is significantly higher than that of the previously listed types of brick. The main material for the production of chamotte brick is refractory clay (chamotte) and kaolin. Due to the inclusion of a large percentage of alumina-containing (Al2O3) and silicon-containing (SiO2) components, the material is also called aluminosilicate refractory. It is this refractory brick that has found the greatest application in household construction, where it is used for laying stoves, fireplaces, and chimneys. An important advantage of this type of refractory is its price. Buying refractory chamotte brick is much more profitable than other types of refractory brick.
